Projected Maintenance End Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 5:30pm Pacific Time

Impact:

Users may encounter sporadic access service availability, service disruption, and incorrect presence during this maintenance window.

User Action:
No action needs to be taken by your Office Communications Server administrator(s). Additionally, there will not be any further notification regarding this maintenance activity unless there is a broad disruption of service. In such cases, we will relay outage communication accordingly.

Don't install KB974571 to OCS Servers

OCS services fail to start when you apply this patch.
To fix this error, remove the patch and restart the server.

XMPP Gateway

Today Microsoft announced the release of the OCS 2007 R2 XMPP Gateway. The Gateway provides Presence and two-party IM interoperability with the XMPP based systems of Jabber and Google Talk.

1. The Gateway interoperability has been tested against Jabber CXP Server version 5.4 and the current version of Google Talk. The OCS 2007 R2 XMPP Gateway is supported by Microsoft Support
2. This Gateway is licensed as Additional Software to OCS 2007 R2, meaning that there is no additional license cost associated with deploying the Gateway for OCS 2007 R2 licenses.

New Office Communications Server Public IM Connectivity Licensing

Today Microsoft has announced changes to the Office Communications Server Public IM Connectivity (PIC) license that provides instant messaging and presence federation to the Windows Live, AOL and Yahoo! public IM networks. Starting October 1, 2009, the following licensing changes will be made:

1. A PIC License will no longer be required for federation with Windows Live and American Online (AOL). Customers qualify for federation with AOL if they have Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Standard CAL or active Software Assurance on their current LCS/OCS license.
2. Customers who want Yahoo! federation will continue to purchase PIC licenses. The price of PIC will be reduced by 50%, effective October 1, 2009, to reflect this change.

Temporary Yahoo! PIC Maintenance: September 24, 2009 – September 25, 2009

Summary:
Yahoo! will be performing maintenance that will affect their OCS gateways. The outage is scheduled to be brief, but as a precautionary measure, the following maintenance window has been declared:

Maintenance Start Date/Time: 9/24/2009, 10:00pm Pacific Time
Maintenance End Date/Time: 9/25/2009, 1:00am Pacific Time

Impact:
Office Communicator users may notice incorrect presence of their Yahoo! Contacts, or may not be able to communicate via PIC with their their Yahoo! contacts.

User Action:
No action needs to be taken by your Office Communications Server administrator(s). Additionally, there will not be any further notification regarding this maintenance activity unless there is a broad disruption of service. In such cases, we will relay additional outage communication accordingly.

Polycom CX5000

Today I was called to a customer, who had some problems with their Roundtable device.

They complained about bad sound and video switching between different pictures…

It was a brand new Polycom CX5000 Roundtable device from May 2009, but still my first thought was hardware error, so I tried the device on my laptop, but without any problems…

Looking closer on the their desktop, I noticed that the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client detected the CX5000 device as a standard USB webcam, and not as a Roundtable device. This pointed me in the driver’s direction, but a CX5000 is OCS Compliant, meaning no drivers needed…

The customer used Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client version 8.0.6362.0, so maybe this client was to old, or at least the driver installed with this version was too old.

I checked the CX5000 datasheet on polycom.com, and there is a note about the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client must be version 8.0.6362.128 or later to support this device.

So after an update to the newest version of Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client, everything worked as expected.

Lesson learned; always use the latest Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client and Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 Conferencing Add-in for Microsoft Office Outlook, to avoid problems…
